The regional grid operator, MISO, has issued a power supply warning due to high energy demand across the Midwest. We’re asking members to reduce non-essential electricity use to help prevent prescribed power outages.
How You Can Help
- Lower your thermostat a few degrees and use alternate heat sources (gas, wood fireplaces, etc.) if they’re safely available
- Turn off devices and lights that aren’t being used
- Avoid charging electric vehicles
- Postpone major appliances – delay running clothes washers, dryers, and dishwashers
- Minimize cooking – use microwaves, air fryers, or instant pots instead of electric ovens and ranges
- Reduce hot water use if possible
Understanding Potential Outages
We’re also expecting extreme cold and snowfall overnight, which increases the likelihood of weather-related outages. There’s a significant difference between power-supply related outages and weather-related outages.
- Power supply outages may occur when the regional demand for electricity exceeds available generation. If we’re required to implement a prescribed or controlled outage, we’ll call you as soon as we’re notified. If controlled outages are implemented in our area, we expect them to last about two hours.
- Weather-related outages will be restored by our crews as safely and quickly as possible.
We’re grateful to have an active, engaged membership. Thank you for helping our region avoid prescribed outages.
