    About 600 Southwestern Electric members lost power this morning as storms passed through the cooperative’s service area.
  • Construction Causes Vandalia Power Outage Tuesday, February 18, 2014
    About 160 Southwestern Electric members in Vandalia were without power this afternoon after a construction crew dug into an underground power line. The accident occurred near Highway 40 about 3:20 p.m. Southwestern crews isolated the issue and rerouted power, restoring electricity to members at 4:15 p.m.

    Due to inclement weather and the number of snow days experienced by students in Southwestern Electric’s service area, the cooperative is extending its scholarship deadline by one week.     Southwestern Electric Cooperative is urging members without power to find a safe, warm shelter. “We’re asking our members to prepare for an extended outage,” said Joe Richardson, the co-op’s director of communications. “High winds and drifting snow have created dangerous travel conditions throughout our service area,” Richardson said. “To ensure the safety of our line crews, we’re dispatching trucks in teams of three. As a result, it will take us significantly longer to respond to outages,” he said. “Due to dangerously cold temperatures, members who depend on electricity for heat are strongly advised to find a safe, warm shelter until power is restored.”
