    A tree fire near Triad Road has left about 200 Southwestern Electric members south of St. Jacob without power this afternoon. The fire interrupted power at about 3 p.m. As of 4 p.m., fire protection district personnel were en route and line crews were on site. The cooperative expected to restore power by 6:30 p.m.

    About 425 members served by Southwestern Electric Cooperative’s Shafter Substation lost power at 5:13 a.m. when a lightning strike set fire to a utility pole north of Vandalia Lake. Southwestern line crews restored power to 400 members shortly after 7 a.m. The remaining 25 members were in service at 9:08 a.m.

    Powerful thunderstorms swept across Southwestern Illinois this afternoon, breaking poles and bringing down power lines across Southwestern Electric Cooperative’s service area. “As of 3:40 p.m., we have about 625 members without power,” said Joe Richardson, director of communications for Southwestern Electric Cooperative.

    About 430 Southwestern Electric members in Madison and Macoupin counties were without power for three hours this morning. The outages were a result of damage to lightening arrestors at the cooperative’s Worden Substation. The outage lasted from 5:18 a.m. until about 8:15 a.m.
